How should I deal with the questioning and statement process?

  • Answer all questions truthfully.

  • Ask questions whenever you do not understand something.

  • Be cautious with your trust.

  • If items are needed as evidence or exhibits, ask for a written receipt for them.

  • Ask for the name, badge number and contact phone number for the investigating officer as well as the incident number.

  • Read carefully any written statement given to the police before signing it.

  • Never sign the statement you’ve made until you have clarified it in your own mind.

  • It’s okay to ask for time to rewrite the statement if you are uncomfortable with the wording.

  • Never agree to something simply because you feel intimidated by “legalese.”
