What is probation?

There is some confusion between probation and parole. Probation is ordered by the judge at the time of sentencing. It is usually imposed instead of a prison term but may be imposed in addition to a prison term. Probation allows the person to live in the community under the supervision of a probation officer. Conditions and restrictions also apply. In contrast, parole is granted only by a parole board and applies only to prison inmates.
