Check with your provincial or territorial Workers Compensation Board. In some cases, family members may be eligible to receive certain benefits if their loved one is murdered at work, provided that the job is covered by Workers Compensation and provided that a fatal claim is filed by the company.
The following are examples of compensation paid by the Workers Compensation Board of Manitoba: A lump sum payment may be made to the family at the time of death to help cover funeral costs. A continuing amount may be paid to the surviving spouse for a period of five years or until the youngest child turns 18.
Counselling costs may be covered for the surviving spouse and children. The length of time for counselling and the costs covered are evaluated on a case by case basis. Each case is adjudicated differently.
Counselling costs may also be covered for a person who has witnessed someone murdered at work, provided that the job of the person killed was covered by Workers Compensation and provided that a fatal claim was filed by the company.
For more information consult your local telephone listings for the Workers Compensation Board in your area.
