What compensation might victims receive?

In some cases, depending on the provincial or territorial legislation, survivors of homicide may be eligible to receive benefits from a compensation for victims of crime office. Funeral expenses and death benefits for dependents or for a dependent spouse may be covered if there are no other insurance benefits, Canada Pension Plan benefits or benefits payable through work insurance or other programs. In some provinces, all other sources of benefits will be examined before this office will pay compensation. Benefits from these sources are deducted off the top.

You should not be surprised if you are not eligible to receive compensation. It is considered as a “last resort” fund, if you have no other benefits at all.
