What is the Crown?

This is another name for the Crown attorney is Crown counsel or prosecutor. This lawyer, who is employed by the government, represents the Queen (Regina) or the State. The Crown attorney does not represent the victim or the victim’s family. It is his or her job to present the case against the accused in court, based on the evidence gathered by the police. It is the Crown’s responsibility to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the accused has committed the crime and, consequently, is guilty.

When the case is listed, it appears as “Regina (The Queen) vs. The Accused.” It may surprise you that the name of the victim who has been murdered does not appear anywhere in the listing. The case will always be referred to by the name of the accused.

Just like during the investigation process where you could contact the investigator involved with the case, you can also contact the Crown attorney directly for more information.
